Same day flower delivery in Eccles
Before we get onto the cakes, we will give a brief history of our town. There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating from prehistoric times, but Eccles developed around the 13th century parish Church of St. Mary.
Until the Industrial Revolution and the establishment of a textile industry in the town, Eccles was a predominantly agriculture area. When the world’s first passenger railway, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was constructed, Eccles grew along the route linking the two cities.
In 1901 the Eccles Corporation was given a motorised fire engine by the Protector Lamp and Lighting Co., making Eccles the first municipal corporation in England to operate such a vehicle. We know everyone wants to know about the cakes, we just wanted to highlight some other noteworthy facts about our lovely town…
Sometimes known as ‘dead fly pies’ Eccles cakes are synonymous with town, they were first sold from a shop belonging to James Birch in the 18th century. These delicacies are still made in town to this day and are made using a traditional recipe of flaky pastry, butter, nutmeg, currants, candied peel and sugar, and are exported around the world. Great, now we’re hungry…
The flower of Eccles
Due to the area’s history during the Industrial Revolution it is little surprise that the flower of Eccles is Common Cotton Grass (Eriopholum Angustifolium). In summer the flowers of this plant are fluffy, white and fibrous and were used in textile manufacture. This useful and pretty flower can still be found growing in abundance across the Greater Manchester region.
